Woman’s Terrifying Encounter with Dangerous Plant Leaves Her Hospitalized and Disfigured

Tina Sabine, a 28-year-old woman from the UK, recently shared her harrowing experience after unintentionally coming into contact with giant hogweed, considered one of the country’s most perilous plants. While taking her dogs for a walk in 2021, Sabine brushed against the plant, causing her face to swell so severely that she likened her appearance to that of a Teletubby character.

The giant hogweed, a flowering plant related to carrots, was introduced to the UK in the 1980s and can grow to enormous proportions, especially during the summer months. Contact with or damage to the plant can result in severe burns within 24 to 48 hours, and if it comes in contact with the eyes, it can even cause blindness. This plant is also present in the US, where it has been designated as a federally listed noxious weed in New York, Country Living reports.

Sabine described her ordeal, stating that she woke up one morning unable to move, experiencing pain and noticing her hand had become swollen and bright red as if it had been exposed to acid. She was hospitalized for a month, enduring excruciating blisters and burns that rendered her unable to walk for two weeks.

During her hospital stay, Sabine’s fingers swelled to the point where her rings had to be cut off, and her face became disfigured due to the extreme swelling. The reaction even led to a blood clot in her spine, causing severe pain while walking.

Recovering from the incident has been a long process for Sabine. She relied on a mobility scooter for six months and continues to use a walking stick for assistance. Her right hand, which was most affected, still hasn’t fully regained its functionality, told NY Post.

Sharing her story as a warning, Sabine urges others to be aware of the dangers posed by giant hogweed. She expressed concern for children who might come into contact with the plant while playing outdoors. Sabine revisited the location where she encountered the plant and discovered it still present, emphasizing the need for caution and vigilance.

Her frightening encounter serves as a reminder of the potential risks associated with certain plants and the importance of being informed about the dangers they pose.
