In a remarkable turn of events, Ashlee Wilson, a woman based in Perth, recently experienced the shock of a lifetime when she unexpectedly gave birth to a healthy baby girl. Astonishingly, she had no idea she was even pregnant, and only in hindsight does she recognize the subtle “clues” that may have hinted at her condition.
The Australian mother, now 34 years old, revealed, “I honestly had no idea I was pregnant. It was a big surprise.” Wilson recalls instances such as random swelling in her ankles and occasional movements in her stomach, but she attributed these sensations to her body’s reaction to certain foods. Believing her bloating and weight gain were unrelated, she even considered the possibility of entering menopause when her menstrual cycle ceased. “I had no idea what was coming. The whole thing was crazy,” she admitted.
On the day of the unexpected birth, Wilson began experiencing intense abdominal pain around 2 a.m. By 4 a.m., the discomfort had become unbearable, leading her to call emergency services for assistance. Upon examination, St John paramedic Mel Gardiner delivered the astonishing news to Wilson—she was about to become a mother, told news.com.au
Despite being in a state of disbelief, Wilson gave birth to her daughter, Marley-Rae, at 5:26 a.m. on May 6. Gardiner, the paramedic and midwife in attendance, vividly recounted the emotional moment, stating, “I had to actually kind of grab (her) face and … I said, ‘There’s one paramedic, there’s a midwife in this state, and it’s me, and I’m here today, so we’re gonna have your baby.’ And that’s what we did.”
Although it took a few days for Wilson to process the astonishing reality, she now describes the experience as feeling completely natural. She has embraced motherhood wholeheartedly and expressed her gratitude to her supportive family, who rallied together to assist her during this unexpected journey. Wilson shared, “While I and Bub were in the hospital, my family came together and provided everything we needed from scratch.
It was incredible. Donations of clothes and baby essentials have been pouring in from friends and other family members. It’s been so overwhelming.” Despite the initial shock, Wilson is overjoyed and finds herself happier than ever. She cherishes her newfound role as a mother, concluding, “She has lit up my life. I’m so happy she chose me to be her mom.”
