A woman from Ohio is facing murder charges after authorities discovered that she had allegedly abandoned her 16-month-old daughter for a period of eight days while she went on vacation.
According to WKYC, 31-year-old Kristel Candelario confessed to investigators that she had traveled to Puerto Rico and Detroit for vacation. She reportedly left her residence on June 8 and returned on June 16, only to find her baby in an unresponsive state.
Upon investigation, authorities noted that the child was severely dehydrated. They also observed that the baby’s play bin was filled with soiled blankets, and a bottom liner saturated with urine and feces.
Neighbors expressed their willingness to have cared for the child if they had been asked, as reported by WSAZ. Suleym Gonzalez, a neighbor, mentioned that Candelario was not typically the primary caretaker of her daughter, as the responsibility usually fell on the grandmother.
Gonzalez stated, “She always wanted to go out and just left her with her grandma and all that,” according to WSAZ. Candelario was arrested and charged with murder. On June 20, she appeared in court for arraignment and was given a bond of $1 million. A pre-trial hearing has been scheduled for June 28.
