Texas Man Accused of Killing Four, Including Toddler, Dies from Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound in Tragic Events

A 21-year-old Texas man, Byron Carrillo, suspected of killing four individuals in Dallas, including a 1-year-old child, reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while being pursued by authorities.

Carrillo, who had removed an ankle monitor, allegedly shot and killed Jose Lopez, 50, Karina Lopez, 33, Vanessa De La Cruz, 20, and a 1-year-old child identified as Logan De La Cruz. The child was taken to the hospital but succumbed to injuries. A 15-year-old girl was also hospitalized, while a 13-year-old girl in the residence remained unharmed.

According to the Dallas Police Department, Carrillo fled the scene, stole a car, and headed south. Texas Highway Patrol located him near Austin, leading to a pursuit. During the chase, Carrillo crashed the stolen vehicle and reportedly inflicted a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head as officers approached.

The Texas Rangers, the state law enforcement agency, are investigating Carrillo’s death. Authorities had previously placed the ankle monitor on Carrillo following a 2021 aggravated assault charge.

Family members, cited by WFAA, indicated that Carrillo was Vanessa’s ex-boyfriend and Logan’s father. Annabel De La Cruz, the daughter of Jose and Karina Lopez and the sister of Vanessa, initiated a GoFundMe campaign to support her and her three sisters, expressing gratitude for any assistance in coping with the tragic loss of their parents, sister, and nephew.
