Mother arrested, man on the run after ‘heinous’ abuse of 5-month-old baby, sheriff says

A mother has been arrested while a 25-year-old man remains at large after their alleged involvement in the abuse of a five-month-old baby boy, according to Bexar County deputies.

On June 16, deputies responded to Christus Hospital after Jeida Rodgers, the baby’s mother, brought him in with multiple injuries and appeared lethargic. Upon arrival, deputies discovered that the baby had suffered fractures to his wrist, six to eight ribs, his vertebrae, bruising on his forehead, bite marks on his face, and injuries consistent with a bottle being forced into his mouth, reported KSAT.

Additionally, the child tested positive for THC, a component of marijuana. Sheriff Javier Salazar described the case as a horrifying instance of child abuse, expressing deep concern for the immense pain and suffering endured by the baby. Rodgers, however, proved uncooperative during the investigation and provided false information during questioning.

Further investigation revealed that Corey Alexander Berry, Rodgers’ on-again, off-again boyfriend, had been caring for the child for several weeks and was responsible for the abuse. Berry is currently evading arrest and is wanted on charges of causing serious bodily injury to a child.

Salazar emphasized that Rodgers was not only complicit in the abuse but also played a direct role through her omissions, despite having previously separated from Berry due to suspicions of violence towards the baby.

Rodgers has been charged with serious bodily injury to a child through omission and was apprehended on Friday. Her bond has been set at $35,000.

While the baby boy is expected to recover, Salazar acknowledged that the long-lasting effects of the abuse would likely impact him for the rest of his life.

Bexar County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) is actively searching for Corey Alexander Berry and urges anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact them at (210) 335-6000.
