Today, Oakland County Prosecutor KAREN D. McDONALD has filed charges against 44-year-old Gregory Keyier-Deniro Davis in connection with the tragic shooting that resulted in the death of his ex-girlfriend, a 40-year-old woman from Sterling Heights, and the mother of their child.
Davis faces several serious charges, including first-degree Premeditated Murder, Assault with Intent to Murder, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Felonious Assault, and four counts of Felony Firearm Second Offense.
The incident occurred at a car dealership in Royal Oak Township on Saturday, May 20, 2023. Allegedly, Davis followed the victim into the parking lot and used his vehicle to block hers. When the victim exited her vehicle to seek help, Davis shot her while she attempted to flee and then fired another close-range shot with a 12-gauge semi-automatic shotgun.
It is believed that Davis obtained the weapon from another source. The couple’s 10-year-old child witnessed the horrifying event from the passenger seat of the victim’s vehicle. Davis later surrendered to the police on the same day and is currently in custody at the Oakland County Jail, CBS News.
Oakland County Prosecutor McDonald expressed her deep sorrow over the horrific and tragic nature of this incident. She emphasized that approximately 70 women are shot and killed by their intimate partners each month in the United States.
The shooting occurred at a place of business where other employees were present just a few feet away. Davis has been charged with first-degree murder, the most severe charge under Michigan law, and the prosecutor’s office intends to vigorously prosecute him for his alleged actions.
First-degree Premeditated Murder carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Assault with Intent to Murder is a felony offense punishable by life imprisonment or a specified number of years.
Felon in Possession of a Firearm is a felony offense punishable by up to 5 years imprisonment and/or a $5,000 fine. Felonious Assault is a felony offense punishable by up to 4 years imprisonment and/or a $2,000 fine. Felony Firearm Second Offense carries a mandatory sentence of 5 years imprisonment.
The arraignment is scheduled to take place at 12:15 pm in the 45th District Court in Oak Park. It is essential to remember that criminal charges are accusations, and all individuals are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
