Detainees allege they are forced to share mattresses with pests inside the mice-infested detention facility

A shocking video taken inside the Yongah Hill Detention Centre (YHIDC), located east of Perth, reveals that the immigration facility has been overrun by mice that have infested bedding, and kitchens, and made detainees sick.

The detainees, who are protesting against their ‘inhumane’ living conditions, claim that mice are scampering through their beds and nibbling on their food.

Hugo Dimitri, a detainee who changed his name, expressed his shock upon arriving at the centre, saying that mice were “walking through the room, going over my bags and everything.” He further stated that many inmates have complained to the guards and officers about the mice invasion persisting for more than a year, but no action has been taken.

Video evidence shows a mouse scrambling in a stainless steel sink at the detention centre. Other videos and images allegedly show mice inside the toaster, in the bedroom, bathrooms, and outdoor areas, as well as food packets and clothing with holes in them.

Dimitri claims that despite numerous complaints about detainees becoming sick, nothing has been done to fix the issue. Dimitri added that the people in charge were not taking the issue seriously, and when he spoke to them, they laughed and said that it was a normal thing in the centre, reported Daily Mail.

Although the Australian Border Force, which is responsible for the facility, stated that it was aware of detainee reports, it denied that there was a rodent infestation.

The spokesperson said that when pests are reported in immigration detention facilities (IDFs), immediate action is taken to ensure their removal within a reasonable timeframe, but without specifying what actions were taken.

Dimitri called the conditions at the centre ‘not humane’ for the 254 people held there. The Yongah Hill Detention Centre is one of several such facilities around Australia that holds people who have overstayed, been denied or breached their visa, and those who have arrived without one.
