A beauty pageant in Brazil was abruptly cut short over the weekend when an enraged man stormed the stage and shattered the winner’s crown. The incident occurred during the Miss Gay Mato Grosso 2023 competition, which celebrates the LGBTQIAP+ community.
As contestant Emannuelly Belini, representing Várzea Grande, was announced the winner, an unexpected turn of events unfolded. Moments before the chaos erupted, Emannuelly and fellow contestant Nathally Becker from Cuiabá stood together, awaiting the winner’s declaration.
Emannuelly, taken aback by her victory, covered her face with her hands in disbelief. Just as she composed herself and prepared to be crowned, an irate man stormed onto the stage, snatched the tiara, and forcefully slammed it to the ground.
While the identity of the man remains undisclosed, local media reports suggest he is Nathally’s husband, seemingly upset that his partner did not emerge as the winner. He retrieved the tiara, and smashed it once again, shattering it into pieces.
Nathally, visibly stunned, was then led backstage by her husband before security apprehended him. The competition was fiercely contested, and the decision between the two finalists was evidently a close one.
Pageant coordinator Malone Haenisch condemned the incident, expressing that the man’s actions caused inconvenience and damage. She asserted that the judge’s decision was fair and defended the integrity of the Miss Gay Mato Grosso competition.
Haenisch emphasized, “We condemn the incident that occurred during the crowning of Miss Várzea Grande when the partner of Miss Cuiabá, who came in second, invaded the stage and destructively destroyed the crown.”
The organizer stated that the pageant’s legal team has been informed and will pursue necessary legal actions. Haenisch concluded the statement with a congratulatory message to Emannuelly, commending her on winning the coveted title.
“The Miss Gay Mato Grosso pageant team congratulates Emannuelly Belini, elected Miss Gay Mato Grosso 2023 on the evening of May 27. We extend our best wishes and hope you have a glamorous reign, representing the voice and aspirations of the LGBTQIAP+ community.”
