According to a Law and Crime report on Monday, September 25, 2023, a disturbing kidnapping case unfolded in Kennewick, Washington earlier this year.
25-year-old Johnny Ray Cochran Davis was sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison for kidnapping his 19-year-old ex-girlfriend in broad daylight.
The incident occurred on February 24, 2023. According to police reports, Davis and the victim had gotten into an argument the night before.
To get away from him, the victim went to stay at a friend’s house.
She was not actually a resident at the South Newport Street home where the kidnapping took place.
Davis showed up at the home around 8 a.m. and started honking his car horn repeatedly to try and lure the victim outside.
When she came out and saw it was Davis, she turned around and ran back into the house, locking the door behind her.
Davis then slammed his shoulder into the door twice to break it down.
Ring doorbell footage captured the chilling incident.
Davis can be heard yelling “You are coming with me right now” while the victim screams “No!” He drags her out by the hair and shoves her into his car as she continues shouting for help.
Nearby construction workers heard the commotion and tried to intervene, but failed to stop Davis from speeding off with the victim.
According to the victim, Davis punched and threatened to kill her during the drive.
He also pulled out a hatchet and slammed it into the seat next to her.
After several hours, police located Davis at an apartment complex and took him into custody as he tried to flee.
The victim was also found at the apartment unharmed.
Davis pleaded guilty to first-degree burglary, unlawful imprisonment, and felony harassment.
During sentencing, he told the court he “was not in the right state of mind” at the time.
However, the video evidence clearly showed the victim was taken against her will in a traumatic, violent encounter.
This was not Davis’ first run-in with the law. In 2021, he was arrested twice – once for threatening to kill someone with a knife and again for possessing methamphetamine and driving a stolen vehicle.
His history demonstrated an escalating pattern of violence and volatile behavior.
The victim is believed to have suffered intense fear and trauma from the experience of being dragged from the home and not knowing if she would survive the attack.
Her screams can be heard in the chilling video as she desperately tried to resist her angry ex-boyfriend.
Davis exhibited extremely aggressive and criminal behavior in targeting the victim because she left him after an argument.
The brazen, forceful kidnapping stunned the Kennewick community and no doubt left the victim with lasting scars.
Davis faced serious consequences for his actions, but the victim’s road to healing from fear and trauma may be long and difficult.
