Homeless Mother Denied Shelter in Yonkers, Forced to Change Baby’s Diaper on Public Bench

According to a recent report, two homeless couples, one with a baby, have been kicked out of a Yonkers hotel to accommodate dozens of migrants being relocated there by New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

The couples, who have been staying at the Ramada Inn on Tuckahoe Road for the past month, were abruptly told that the hotel was fully booked and they would have to leave. Savannah Harp, 24, had to change her 18-month-old son’s diaper on a public bench outside the hotel after being turned away.

Harp has been rebooking her stay at the hotel every morning for the past two weeks, paying $150 a night, but was denied a room on Monday.

She believes the decision was made to make room for up to 100 migrant families who are expected to start arriving at the hotel soon.

Harp expressed frustration at the situation, saying that the migrants don’t have to pay out of their own pockets while she has to pay for her own accommodation and leave whenever the hotel staff tells her to.

Edwin Dominguez Ramos, 57, was also forced to leave the hotel with his girlfriend after being given a week’s notice. Ramos, who has been paying $119 a night to stay at the hotel, has been struggling to find an apartment and is disabled.

He expressed anger that he had spent over $3,000 staying at the hotel and was now being forced to leave. Ramos said that he was born in the US and does not understand why he should be displaced to accommodate migrants from other countries.

The hotel workers denied that the couples were kicked out in favor of the migrants but confirmed that asylum-seeker families were still expected to stay at the hotel.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer said that no migrants had yet been placed in any of the county’s facilities. The displaced couples expressed fear about going into the shelter system, where they could potentially be separated from each other.
