Alex Soros, the son of billionaire George Soros and leader of the Open Society Foundations, has made it clear that he is committed to opposing former President Donald Trump should Trump secure the GOP nomination in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. In an op-ed published on Politico, Alex Soros voiced his concerns about the potential ramifications of a “MAGA-style” Republican victory on European unity and the progress made in response to the Ukraine conflict.
Soros argued that defeating Trump is crucial for the Open Society Foundations’ initiatives in Europe, which have focused on challenging conventional democratic values on the continent, echoing his father’s longstanding efforts in the United States. He also pledged financial support for endeavors aimed at countering Trump’s candidacy in the upcoming election.
Furthermore, Alex Soros affirmed the foundation’s dedication to backing its Ukrainian affiliate, which has played a significant role in civil society initiatives and has received substantial funding from the Open Society Foundations.
In recent years, the Open Society Foundations have faced criticism for their support of progressive causes and campaigns, including the funding of far-left district attorney candidates in cities governed by Democrats. Critics contend that these candidates have implemented policies linked to rising crime rates.
Former President Trump has been an outspoken critic of George Soros and his influence, particularly concerning district attorney appointments. Trump has pledged to appoint U.S. attorneys who differ from what he calls “Soros district attorneys,” emphasizing his commitment to addressing perceived issues within the justice system.
Trump’s campaign video, released in August 2023, outlined his intentions to revamp the Department of Justice, investigate “Marxist” district attorneys, and simultaneously promise to protect civil rights while addressing radicalized elements in various institutions.

“SUCH AN OUTCOME WILL IMPERIL EUROPEAN UNITY AND UNDERMINE THE PROGRESS ACHIEVED ON MANY FRONTS IN RESPONSE TO THE WAR IN UKRAINE,” HE CONTINUED, GOING ON TO PLEDGE FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR EFFORTS TO OPPOSE TRUMP: “WE ARE ADAPTING [OPEN SOCIETY FOUNDATIONS] TO BE ABLE TO RESPOND TO WHATEVER SCENARIOS MIGHT EMERGE, ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ATLANTIC.”

TRUMP SAID THAT THE ATTORNEYS HE WOULD APPOINT WOULD BE “THE MOST FEROCIOUS LEGAL WARRIORS AGAINST CRIME AND COMMUNIST CORRUPTION THAT THIS COUNTRY HAS EVER SEEN.”
