A tragic incident unfolded in Ocala, Florida on June 2, 2023, when a dispute between neighbors turned deadly. Susan Louise Lorincz, a 58-year-old white woman, has been charged with manslaughter in the death of Ajike “AJ” Owens, a black mother of four. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office released several 911 calls, shedding light on the events leading up to the fatal shooting.
According to authorities, the incident originated from a disagreement over children playing outside. Lorincz allegedly yelled at Owens’ children and even threw a roller skate at her 10-year-old son, causing harm.
In response, Owens confronted Lorincz, seeking an explanation and restitution for her actions. The confrontation escalated as Owens repeatedly knocked on Lorincz’s front door, demanding she come out. The released 911 calls captured the tension and fear Lorincz experienced during the incident.
In her first call, Lorincz expressed her concerns to the dispatcher about children trespassing on her property and behaving obnoxiously. She described feeling threatened in her own home and fearing for her life due to the ongoing situation. Lorincz was advised to secure her doors and windows while authorities were dispatched to the scene, told CNN.
Minutes after her initial call, gunshots were reported in the area. In her second 911 call, a visibly shaken Lorincz recounted the tragic event, stating that Owens had attempted to break down her door. Feeling frightened and believing her life was in danger, Lorincz fired her weapon through the door, resulting in Owens being fatally wounded.
“Oh, my God. This lady just tried to break down my door. I shot through the door. Oh my God,” she said. “The woman was screaming and yelling at me trying to break down my door. I didn’t know what to do. I grabbed my gun and shot at the door because I thought she was going to kill me,” Lorincz continued.
One of Owens’ older children witnessed his mother stumbling away from the door and instructed him to call 911. Susan Louise Lorincz claimed self-defense, stating that she believed Owens was attempting to break into her home and had heard threats of harm.
However, after an investigation, detectives determined that her actions were not justifiable under Florida law. As a result, she was arrested and charged with manslaughter with a firearm, culpable negligence, battery, and assault.
Following the shooting, Owens’ family accused Lorincz of harassing their children and using racial slurs. During the investigation, Lorincz admitted to using derogatory terms and racial slurs toward the neighborhood children in the past. These allegations, along with the tragic outcome, led to increased demands for Lorincz’s arrest and charges.
Lorincz’s bond was set at $154,000, which the court deemed appropriate despite her claims of financial limitations. She faces multiple charges, including manslaughter with a firearm, culpable negligence, battery, and assault.
The court imposed restrictions on Lorincz, including a prohibition on possessing firearms or contacting the victim’s family. Additionally, the judge recommended that she not return to her residence due to an eviction notice.
