A 37-year-old man from Chicago is accused of strangling a 39-year-old pregnant woman during an argument, leaving her body in his car for several days, and later disposing of her remains on the side of a road in Lake County last month.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, on Nov. 29 around 7 a.m., deputies responded to a report of possible human remains on the side of Hunt Club Road south of Route 173. Upon arrival, they discovered the body of Megan Lewis, who had died from homicidal violence and was dumped there in the early morning hours.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office performed an autopsy, determining that Megan Lewis was 16 weeks pregnant at the time of her death. Investigators allege that Juan Vega-Montoya was responsible for Lewis’s death. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Vega-Montoya picking up Lewis near Cicero and West Belden avenues in Chicago on Nov. 26. An argument ensued in the car, leading to Lewis’s fatal strangulation.
According to the sheriff’s office, Vega-Montoya drove home after the incident and kept Lewis’s body in his car for approximately two days. He allegedly dumped her body on the side of Hunt Club Road late on the night of Nov. 28, reported CBS News.
Detectives conducted a traffic stop on Vega-Montoya on Dec. 11, taking him into custody and recovering additional evidence from his car. The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved a charge of concealing a homicidal death. Although Lewis’s death occurred in Chicago, murder charges are anticipated, and the investigative information has been forwarded to the Chicago Police Department.
Lake County Sheriff John Idleburg expressed outrage, stating, “It is simply unconscionable to kill someone then dump their body on the side of a roadway in a humiliating fashion.”
Juan Vega-Montoya is currently held in the Lake County Jail.
