A tragic incident unfolded in Texas as a mother lost her life attempting to rescue the family cat from a burning apartment. Responding to a call about a fire at Southway Manor Apartments on Fairway Drive just before 10:30 p.m. local time, the Houston Fire Department encountered intense smoke and fire upon arrival.
According to ABC affiliate KTRK, Firefighters swiftly executed a transitional attack, containing the fire externally before proceeding with an assertive interior operation. Amid successful fire control and search and rescue efforts, the unfortunate discovery of a deceased female was made.
The fire originated in Andrew Salinas’ apartment while his family was asleep. Evacuating along with his brother, wife, and two young sons, Salinas’s wife, Keila Almonte, 33, bravely re-entered the burning apartment to save their cat. Despite Salinas’s desperate pleas, she did not emerge from the inferno, per KTRK and CBS affiliate KHOU.
The Houston Fire Department reported that four units were destroyed by the blaze, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause.
In the aftermath of this devastating event, a GoFundMe fundraiser has been initiated to support the family’s funeral expenses, with over $3,000 raised as of Friday morning.
Andrew Salinas now faces the heart-wrenching task of explaining the loss of their mother to his sons. Amidst the material losses, Salinas expressed, “Everything burned down, and I don’t care about none of that. I just want my wife back.”
