A 22-year-old woman, identified as Jackalyn, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after being found guilty of manslaughter with a weapon or firearm in connection with the death of her 36-year-old mother, Amanda.
The tragic incident unfolded during an argument between the two family members, which erupted over Jackalyn’s relationship with one of her friends. The sentencing was delivered by Judge Charles, following a jury’s determination of her guilt.
Assistant State Attorney Samantha expressed gratitude for achieving justice on behalf of Amanda and her grieving family. She also hoped that the family could find some comfort in knowing that Jackalyn would be held accountable for her actions and that Amanda’s voice had been heard.
The incident occurred on October 23, 2020, when police officers responded to a disturbance call at the victim’s residence. Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered the 36-year-old victim with a single stab wound to her chest. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Amanda was tragically pronounced dead.
Before losing consciousness, Amanda informed several witnesses outside the residence that her daughter was responsible for the stabbing. By the time someone dialed 911 to report the attack, the 22-year-old daughter had already fled the scene. According to multiple witnesses, Amanda was inside the home when Jackalyn arrived.
Law enforcement officers subsequently located Jackalyn a short time later while she was attempting to conceal herself on a bus. She was taken into custody and initially charged with second-degree murder.
During interviews with investigators, the young woman claimed that she had acted in self-defense. She asserted that while she was inside a bedroom in the home, her mother entered and physically assaulted her.
She further stated that she resorted to using a knife to stop the altercation before disposing of the weapon in a yard and fleeing the scene. However, prosecutors contended that the attack occurred during a confrontation arising from Jackalyn’s relationship with one of Amanda’s friends.
