An “extremely rare” miracle birth has resulted in a baby being born with a third arm growing from its back

A miraculous baby has been born with an incredibly unusual ailment that causes its back to sprout a third hand, making it a third hand. After seeing the third limb growing from the baby’s back, doctors in Rajasthan, north India, diagnosed the infant with polymelia.

A very unusual medical disorder called polymelia, in which a person is born with additional limbs has so far only been mentioned a few times. The infant’s third limb, which can be seen in a video that was uploaded to the internet soon after the baby was born, is much shorter than its other two limbs and has only three “fingers” on the “hand” at the end.

The infant can be seen in the video still connected to its mother’s umbilical cord, suggesting that the delivery had just occurred when the film was captured. The baby’s name, sex, or birth technique have not yet been disclosed by the mother, Prosuta Suman, according to the DailyMail.

Although polymelia is very uncommon, doctors have a general understanding of how extra arms develop during pregnancy. At four to five weeks, a fetus begins to form two pairs of fleshy buds that will eventually become its limbs.

These buds may, sometimes, be disturbed and disrupted, which results in the formation of more buds that eventually grow into additional limbs. The additional limbs are often less developed than the others because disturbances might occur later in the embryo’s development.

In conjoined twin situations, when one embryo has almost totally shriveled away, babies may also be born with additional limbs. The additional limbs in polymelia instances in the past have been severed to ensure that they don’t hinder a child’s growth.

2016 saw the birth of a newborn girl from Delhi in northern India who has an additional leg growing from her back. Varsha Sena was born with two legs, but a third limb began coming out of her spine in a strange, sideways fashion.

At the end of the previous month, medical professionals at the Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital were successful in amputating the extra leg.
