Life took a challenging turn for Kelly, a 37-year-old mother of four, as she faced not one but two tragedies that tested her strength. First, she suffered a stroke that left her paralyzed from the waist down. However, it wasn’t the physical setback that shattered her; it was the emotional turmoil that followed.
Several years ago, Kelly experienced a devastating spinal stroke, a formidable hurdle in her life. The dedicated teacher and mother of four confronted the daunting prognosis from doctors, warning her that she might never walk again.
Kelly recounted, “I’d had a car accident 18 months prior, and they said that could have caused problems in my spine.” Despite the grim outlook, Kelly was determined to return to work and rebuild her life for the sake of her children.
Tragically, it was precisely when she needed his support the most that her husband of 14 years decided to abandon her. Merely five days into her hospitalization, he expressed his desire for a divorce. Paralyzed and heartbroken, Kelly found herself in her hospital bed, on the brink of despair.
“After my husband left me in the hospital, my friend, Sarah, became my next of kin. It was she and the children who supported me during my recovery. Looking back, I was unhappy in my marriage, but we had built a life together and had responsibilities,” Kelly shared with The Mirror.
On the contrary, her ex-husband Richard claims he had intended to separate the day before Kelly suffered her stroke and became paralyzed from the neck down. The road to recovery was arduous, and while doctors held hope for her regaining mobility in her legs, nothing was certain. Despite contemplating surrendering multiple times, Kelly persevered.
“The first time I went out in a wheelchair, I felt like everyone was staring at me. I despised it and despised myself. If someone had given me the choice, I would have ended my life. I didn’t want to live anymore,” Kelly revealed.
During her grueling rehabilitation journey, which involved countless hours of physiotherapy, Kelly received unwavering support from her personal trainer, Keith, a former rugby league star and athlete.
Their rapport grew, and they began to spend more time together. Keith frequently inquired about Kelly’s progress, and their relationship blossomed. They became a couple and eventually fell in love, a glimmer of hope for Kelly, who had once hit rock bottom.
Keith quickly gained the affection of Kelly’s children, offering a much-needed boost to the family. After spending four months in the hospital, Kelly was finally able to return home.
With Keith’s assistance and extensive exercises, she gradually regained movement in her legs. While she can now walk independently, she still relies on her wheelchair for long distances. Since her stroke, Kelly has completed several marathons with Keith’s support and her custom-made AI-assisted leg frame.
During the COVID-19 lockdowns, Keith and Kelly shared their journey of recovery on social media, inspiring countless individuals. Kelly stands as a testament to resilience and the refusal to give up. Together with Keith, they defied the doctors’ expectations.
Unfortunately, it appears that Keith and Kelly may no longer be together. In 2023, Keith hasn’t posted any photos of Kelly, although he hasn’t deleted any pictures either. Moreover, Kelly seems to have removed her active social media accounts.
