After sister found texts about sex, former “Rookie Teacher of the Year” admitted to sexually abusing the 14-year-old boy

A former middle school drama teacher once celebrated as the “Rookie Teacher of the Year” at her school, has pleaded guilty to six charges in a Florida courtroom, more than two years after being arrested for se*xually abusing a 14-year-old student.

Brittany Lopez-Murray, now 33, entered a guilty plea to all six charges, including lewd and lascivious battery, lewd and lascivious molestation of a child, and electronic transmission harmful to minors, as reported by NBC Miami.

The former Hialeah Middle School drama teacher was sentenced to house arrest and mandated to undergo a rehabilitation program for mentally disordered se*x offenders. Additionally, she received a two-year community control sentence.

Lopez-Murray, honored with the “Rookie Teacher of the Year” distinction in 2017, was arrested in October 2021 when the boy’s family discovered explicit text messages on his phone. One message expressed her feelings toward him, leading to an arrest affidavit indicating that the abuse began shortly after the text was sent.

The teacher and her former student met at a local Starbucks for breakfast, and she later se*xually abused him in her white Jeep, including instances after picking him up from basketball practice and his home.

Text exchanges revealed mutual enjoyment of the encounters. The boy’s sister became suspicious of his phone activities, discovering explicit messages and photos exchanged between him and the teacher. The sister alerted their father, leading to the arrest.

The affidavit also noted that the defendant groomed and encouraged the victim to send explicit images, using phrases like “perfect” and “yum.”

Wednesday’s plea deal was reportedly approved by the victim’s family, marking a somber resolution to a disturbing case of abuse and exploitation within an educational setting.
